Easter is here again, yes it is. The
words ‘Happy Easter’ is muttered by almost everyone, everywhere around the world. Sadly enough, I
am mostly indifferent about these greetings. What is in Easter to be happy about,
or what exactly is the true meaning of Easter, I ask myself (just as I asked ‘what
is good about Good Friday’)? Perhaps, you reason as I do. Has Easter lost its
true meaning?
The Easter we celebrate today is
an intriguing blend of religious and secular traditions and culture, with
historical tracing to Paganism, Christianity and even Judaism. Is Easter about the beautiful Easter bunnies
or the cute little colored eggs we hunted for back in primary school; or more
interestingly, is it about the resurrection of Jesus? Whatever meaning you hold
onto, the underlying truth is that Easter is a time to celebrate new life. The eggs
represent ‘new life’ because new life hatches from the eggs while the resurrection
of Jesus from the dead after being in the tomb for three days signifies a “new
life” “new birth”, “new order”.
As Christians, the bible teaches
that the resurrection of Jesus, which Easter celebrates, is the foundation of
our faith. “He was the representation of
the sacrificial lamb to take away the sins of the world. He was the final
sacrifice”. This means that we don’t have to sacrifice animals to atone our
sins; he has done that already for us at the cross. His blood cleanses us from
all sins.
For all it is worth, it is necessary
you find a true meaning for Easter within yourself and celebrate it. Celebrate all
expression of joy however they manifest in your life. If you haven’t experienced
this ‘new life’ in Jesus or perhaps Easter has no meaning to you at all, regard
today as another day to celebrate your existence –many would have loved to see
today but they are no more.
Word for the day: In the face of insecurity, economic distress and
uncertainty about the future in our country, I pray that we all enjoy the
newness Easter brings and merry in the living hope that our tomorrow will be
better.
HAPPY EASTER! *grins* Oya,
